What Hard is like
Hard gives you 6 letters to place: more spots, more ways for letters to repeat, and more words that share a pattern. The answers are still everyday words, so Hard is about method, not vocabulary. Expect to use most of your guesses on a tricky day, and expect a smaller, more determined leaderboard.
Tips for 6-letter words
- Lock in the ending early. Many longer words finish with -ING, -ION, -ERS, -EST or -LY, and one guess can test several of them.
- Find the vowels first: words this long usually have two or three, and placing them narrows the field fast.
- A hint goes further on a longer word. Hint-free solves always rank first. Save it for when a guess would only rule out a letter or two.
How a Hard race is scored
Find the 6-letter word in up to 7 guesses. You can use up to 3 hints. The clock starts when your board appears and stops when you finish. Our server keeps the time, so it’s fair for everyone. Daily results rank hint-free solves first, then by guesses, then by time. Unsolved results rank last. Each solved Daily Race earns (8 − guesses used) × 100 points, plus a speed bonus of up to 99 points that shrinks evenly to 0 at 7 minutes, minus 150 points for each hint you used. An unsolved race earns 0. The speed bonus is worth less than one guess, so with the same hints, fewer guesses always scores more. A hint-free solve in 3 guesses at the one-minute mark is worth 584 points; one in 4 guesses at 20 seconds is worth 494.
